Glycolic acid is one of a number of "Alpha Hydroxy Acids" (AHAs), naturally occurring substances found in fruits, sugar cane, sour milk and the body. These substances are exceptional for exfoliating surface skin cells by gently loosening the bonds that hold these cells together. The smallest molecule of all AHAs, glycolic acid, which is found naturally in sugar cane, is considered by many researchers to be the Alpha Hydroxy Acid most adaptable for cosmetic purposes.
